My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers, #4) in SOS: Serious Overload of Series

My Soul to Steal was another great addition to Soul Screamers. The series definitely has it's ups and downs for me. Somethings bug me - all the teenage angst mainly, but overall it's a good YA series about something we don't get elsewhere, bean shide.

I struggled throughout this one. At times I wanted to sit Kaylee down and have a "chat" with her. "Either love 'im or leave 'im. You're killin' the poor guy." While other times I wanted to support her. "Take your time, honey." She's not really give My Soul to Steal was another great addition to Soul Screamers. While other times I wanted to support her. "Take your time, honey." She's not really given much of a chance to do either as Nash's not-really-ex Sabine shows up at school. Sabine is beyond messed up and determined to do whatever it takes to get Nash back.

[NOTE: Sabine is mentioned in Tod's novella, [book:Reaper|9680403]. It's not a necessary read, but offers up some insight into Tod and Nash's life pre-reaper.]

Alec is still living with Kaylee and her dad, having escaped Avari in My Soul to Keep. Although he appears to be 19, he's closer to 50, having spent 26 years in the Netherworld.

While Kaylee's struggle to forgive did, at times, drive me bloody mad, I found both her internal battle and Nash's to be what you'd expect based on what happened in the previous book. I will definitely continue with the series and have high hopes for more Tod in the future. He continues to be one of my favorite characters.

This is definitely my favorite of the series thus far. After finishing book #3, on my lunch hour, I started this book after I put the baby to bed, and got hubby off to work. And then I started reading voraciously!

I have to hand it to Rachel Vincent - she's got teen angst down pat, and My Soul to Steal is brimming with it. Kaylee is finding drama at every turn, and that's not taking into account interference from the Netherworld.

Sabine, first introduced in the novella Reaper (not required reading), is troubled to say the least. She's a tough-talking, creepy girl. From her long black hair to her fixation on sex and viciously blunt nature, she bears a startling resemblance to Faith from Buffy. As with Faith, I didn't particularly like her. However, she serves as a great comparison to Kaylee whose goody-two-shoes attitude can get boring.

As Kaylee tries to keep Sabine away from Nash, she's also dealing with horrors of a different kind. Chaos has errupted at her school. Teachers are dropping like flies. Alec is having trouble adjusting to the real world. There are problems everywhere. I liked this, especially compared to the previous book where the plot took far too long to get moving. Here, we have action from the get-go and Vincent does a pretty good job balancing it all.

I was also thankful that the foreshadowing tidbits were not clue-by-fours this time round. There were plenty of hints, but it was plausible that the characters wouldn't pick up on them right away. Also, although I guessed certain aspects of the plot from early on, there were still some surprises in store.

Finally, my usual complaint - I want Tod to get more page time! He's so amusing, practical, and crush-worthy that Nash pales by comparison. Perhaps it's that his snark and not-so-alive status lend him a more mature attitude, appealing to my aged self? Whatever it is, I love him.

I have no idea what the next book will bring, but this installment was diverting enough that I'll definitely continue with the series.

P.S. Back to the Buffy comment. So if Sabine is Faith, that makes Kaylee Buffy. Which fits quite nicely with her moralizing martyrdom. Too bad she doesn't use puns. Nash is obviously Angel, because of the hero complex. Tod - he's dead, a smartass, very blonde, tends to do the right things but in the wrong manner, and I love him...ohhh, who could he be? Sophie is obviously early Cordie...

Am I alone in seeing the personality parallels?

Rachel never disappoints me! Her Were-Cat series still holds a special place in my heart and on my shelf, as wall as this series. I loved Kaylee in this book. In the past books I have liked her, but she always seemed to be leaning on Nash. Now we see her standing on her own . I might be in the minority here but I loved Sabine! She was a great character and perfect for getting Kaylee to stand on her own two feet and try to fight for what she wants. I also might be team Sabine + Nash. I wasn't rea ...more

I really like this world that Rachel has created. It is so different from other YA books out. This was another great installment for the series. The reason I didn't give the book a 5 was it didn't end like I thought it was going to or should have so that through me off. It just didn't feel right to me. Overall: I really enjoyed this book. I'm not sure how I feel about where some of the relationships seem to be going but cannot wait to read how they get there. Another great read from Ms Vincent!!
