Still as enthralling and brutal as the first time I read it, this story takes a dark turn and puts Mercy through a lot.

This time she is asked to help the fae with an investigation into who is killing off some of theirs, and Mercy, who needs to repay a debt to the fae, agrees and so begins the series of events that leads to her (view spoiler).

It is dark and painful, but ends in a hopeful note, with (view spoiler)

Mercy Thompson is one of those iconic urban fantasy series that I've been "fixin' to" read for a very long time now. I finally crossed the threshold into Mercy's territory when the GR group Serious Overload of Series picked it up for their series read this year.

This third installment was a one-night read. Mercy gets involved in fae matters, as she returns a favor for her old friend Zee and accompanies him to the fae reservation to sniff out a serial killer. The irony of a Native woman going into

This was an undeniably tough read, but it seems I appreciated more this time around. I'm upping my original rating from three stars to four.

It seems appropriate that the first book to truly delve into the fae is the most unsettling so far. Like the stories we've all heard, the creatures of Underhill are often beautiful and awe-inspiring. They can also be undeniably twisted and cruel - at least by human standards.

But then again, the story also shows that humans can be the most monstrous creatures

This was my favorite Mercy Thompson book yet. Whenever I want to totally lose myself in fiction, I find myself more and more reaching for this series. I get so engrossed in the interesting characters, well-developed world, history and stories, that I breeze right through these. I also appreciated that we got to see Mercy as truly vulnerable in this book, and learned some really important things about Ben and Samuel and Adam that redefine their relationships moving forward in the series. I was so ...more

Oh, my heart is hurting. There is a big shocker at the end of this book, but I think Ms. Briggs handled it with grace and dignity. I loved seeing the fae world and how Mercy has a very tenuous acceptance in it. Zee has long been one of my favorite side characters so I am glad he really got a chance to shine in this one. Ben too, he was actually likeable. This is my favorite in the series thus far.

I feel like we are going down some invisible list of paranormal beings and checking off which ones Mercy has gotten herself into trouble with: 1st book Werewolves *check, 2nd book Vampires *check, this book Fae *check! As usual this book was nonstop action with Mercy right in the thick of it. This book continues to develop Mercy's character and does a good job of exploring her thoughts and feelings as a person. She does a lot of self contemplation into her past and actions. I enjoyed learning mo ...more

Another great book by Patricia Briggs and I believe that it's the last part in Mercy Thompson's trilogy. This one wasn't as excellent as the previous two but only because it focused a lot on the fae world and I was more interested in the werewolves and the pack dynamic. There was also not enough Bran. But it was a very good story and we learned more about the secondary characters like Ben or Zee though we still have no idea if Samuel got over what happened to him - but I hope that this plot will ...more

Mercy rocks! Like any Urban Fantasy protagonist, she is badass and kicks major evildoer butt. Seriously, she doesn't exactly go looking for violence but when she dishes it out she can be pretty damn brutal, and rest assured they definitely had it coming!
What makes her special is that she has believable weaknesses and contradictions just like the rest of us. When she's really upset, this girl bakes brownies and watches bad movies.
She goes through some truly awful stuff in this book, and of cours

I couldn't remember much from the first time I read this book because I originally read it in one sitting well into the night. This time, I listened to the book well into the night again. The reader, Lorelei King, was very good at bringing all the characters to life.

Next up is Bone Crossed.

I didn't "enjoy" this one as much, for all the necessary pts issues, but it was very well done and uncomfortably believable.

On another- admittedly nit picky note- I really wish the illustrators would get some small info about the character before drawing her. Minor pet peeve.
