I'm going to give this a tentative 4 stars.
There was a heck of a lot that I liked about it - the banter between Deph and Annette, her family, the mythology and world-building, and of course, the delicious Roane.
But Deph reaaaaaally grated on me at times. There were moments of complete and utter TSTL, and at one point I was half-hoping she was going to get killed over her procrastinating on the protection spell, just so she could cross over to the other side and Ruthie could tell her to her face ...more

This was heading for 2 stars, which is surprising cause I like Darynda Jones, however, the h Defiance, was a pitiful creature for the first half of the book, whining, stupid, and acting like a desperate teen when she's supposed to be 44 and an accomplished restaurateur. She let her ex & his mother walk all over her, but has 2 dads who would've backed her all day long. Just stupid.
The second half of the book saw her improve, though still thinking stupid a lot of the time.
