What Members Thought

Audiobook with James Marsters as the narrator.
It was a unique and satisfying experience, James Marsters' voice bringing everything to life effortlessly and portraying Harry Dresden's dry sense of humor expertly.
As the first book in the Dresden Files series, this book introduces us to the world of Harry Dresden, Wizard. We get some insight on his view of life, his relationship with the interesting people (or not-people, in the case of Bob, his air spirit bottled in a skull) that are constant in h ...more

This was my third time on Storm Front. I read the book many years ago and was lukewarm on it. I read it again not as many years ago and liked it more and continued with the series, which I absolutely loved.
This third time I'm going with the audiobook for my long commute. I'd heard that James Marsters narration was good and it really is excellent. I'd go so far as to give a 4 start to the audiobook. I never thought I'd prefer an audiobook to actual reading, but it has happened apparently. I'm co ...more

I'd been warned by several people that this first Dresden novel is the weakest of the bunch.
Well, if this is weak, the rest can only be fantastic.
Granted, there are places where the story drags. Like most series introductions, Storm Front is weighed down a tad by its world-building efforts.
Nevertheless, Harry is such an immensely likable guy that I had to keep reading, had to see how he'd manage to come out on top.

Plot: This book is written as a detective story like film noir. The plot follows a normal story arch, but with lots of action from the very beginning. Gritty detective action, humorous dialog, and slight romance fill the pages of the book.
Writing Style: I love the authors humor, and his ability to put his character into impossible situations that don't seem so impossible after you get through them. Butcher is a great juggler, he gives you enough detail to paint a clear picture in your mind but d ...more

A lot better the second time around. Yes, this was a re-read for me and the story seemed much more intriguing this time. I really like Harry, even though he likes to make life harder for himself. I still don't get why he couldn't be straight with Murphy. I mean, he didn't have to tell her about the White Council but there were things that he could have told her, about his suspicions and about Marcone and his man... He had to know that she would go and investigate anyway. Wasn't it better for her

While this is clearly not the best of the Dresden Files, it does set up an amazing amount of content for the rest of the series.
I look at it this way: it is very much a first book! Jim butcher begins to grow up as an author through the first few books, and the series becomes more and more engrossing.
Interestingly enough, now that I have both read and listened to them, I find it very interesting (and grin worthy) that his narrator also seems to grow up through these few books. The first book's ...more

Good setting, good plot. I'll have to read more of this series at some point.
