Midnight Riot is a promising beginning to Aaronovitch’s series. Following PC Peter Grant of the London Metro Police (a mixed-race hero - hurrah!), the story introduces us to London as UF landscape - filled with magic, gods and ghosts and other implied supernatural creatures. When a streak of inexplicable bloody events occurs, Grant finds himself inadvertently swept up in the investigation and in the oddities surrounding it.

Clever story was just too slow to be rated any higher than 3 stars.

Greatly enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting, the magic is engaging without being over the top and the story was pretty solid.
I'm already onto the second book, Moons Over Soho.
9/4/25 - Second read is the Audiobook wonderfully narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. My initial review stands despite 14 years having passed since initially reading the book. There was a LOT I did not remember, but it I enjoyed it a lot. It has been just over 20 years since I was in London and this book makes ...more

Skvělý úvod, až příliš překombinovaná druhá půlka. První polovina se mi moc líbila, byla to skvělá kombinace humoru a akce, zase něco trochu jiného, ale jakmile Peter začal vyšetřovat sám, začala jsem trochu ztrácet zájem, abych řekla pravdu.

I love this series and although I read the second one first - which was a mistake as this book sets a lot of what happens in the second book up - I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
