I freely admit that I have problems with Hamilton's writing. You see, she has a great gift for tense plotting and engaging writing. But instead of utilizing her talents, she turns her books into ridiculous will-they-won't-they soaps. Basically, this book was all about Anita facing off Jean-Claude on the one hand and mulling over Richard on the other. And the back and forth of that quickly became more than annoying. I'm still enjoying this series and have heard enough about the directions it takes, to imagine that I will enjoy the later books
even more.
That said: the third book was where it started to get all dark and kinky. The fourth book is where Anita started doing things which make no sense and I wanted to whack her upside the head. I would classify the Anita Blake books as Erotic Horror. There are Vampires, Werewolves 🐺 and other were animals (both good and bad), as well as legal Zombie raising for the purpose of asking questions of the dead (wills, criminal witnesses, etc). They start out fairly straightforward Zombie raising (Anita's job) and then her life starts to get complicated as she becomes more involved with the "Monsters" on a personal level. Anita's got a new client asking her to look for his missing wife, he can't go to the cops because she is a werewolf and owns a butcher shop. If that is revealed she could loose her business.
So since anita is not an investigator she refers him to her friend Ronnie.
Anita soon discovers that Peggy is not to only lycanthrope missing, but seven others are too and no clue as to where they could be.
She is also called by the police to help ...more
