Like some LKH fans I had my reservations about reading this book. The last one made me think that the series was coming back around to a decent story line. Skin Trade wasn't the best of the series... and then... okay, so you build this entire storyline up for 540 pages to have to come to an end in a few paragraphs!?!?!?! Really? LKH finally gave me a story I could sink my teeth into! Ha! Look at me with the vampire humor! All kidding aside, this felt like the old days of Guilty Pleasures and Blue Moon! Light on the metaphyscial sex and heavy on the plot and details of Anita Blake's world. Although the end felt hurried and too neatly finished, this was by far the best Anita Blake book in years. HBO should have snatched LKH up years ago.

In the latest Anita Blake, LKH brings character development to the foreground, giving us an Anita who is becoming more balanced despite her jaded outlook.
On the metaphysical level, we learn a lot more about Anita's abilities. In the hunt for Vittorio, she's paired up with a SWAT team filled with practitioners. From the reader's perspective, it's a great way to see what else LKH's world contains and to observe how these powers interact with Anita's.

This was probably my least favorite book of the series. It just felt boring.
