I have very mixed feelings about this book. Was I aware, the entire time I was reading, that my bookish sensibilities were being manipulated by a master? Yes, yes I was. Did I care particularly? No, I did not.

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is a love story: the love between adults, love of a child, and love of books.
I tremendously enjoyed this deceptively simple-seeming story. I found it full of wisdom and human insight. Yes, it tells the life of independent bookseller A. J. Fikry, and it does so with warmth and compassion. We learn of his triumphs, his foibles, and his tragedies, and I think the author would make most readers share each of these with him--whether he is co-raising a child with his co ...more

If you find that reading is almost as necessary as breathing, then you will find pleasure in the pages of this book. At times it is laugh-out-loud funny but it also causes tears to flow. A.J. Fikry runs a small bookstore on Alice Island. It becomes a place where loving connections are made.
This was a quick read and for the most part I enjoyed it. I'm still trying to figure out if there was any there there. I did like some of Aj's observations about a reading life though.
