World War II. Occupied France. Two young lives in different places, both impacted by the conflict. They come together in this unique, well-written work of historical fiction. The writing is both beautiful and sad. My heart broke into a million pieces several times while reading.

I have read many of the Pulitzer Prize winning novels and thought, "why did this win?", happily that is not the case for this novel.
Beautifully written between the stories of two young people in the midst of WWII, this novel brings home what it was like for common people to live through the horror that was WWII. Don't let the war fool you though, this is more of a study of characters, rather than a study of war.
I highly recommend this novel. ...more

This is a 5 star book. A joy read. Author writes with intelligence, wit and grit. Warning, there are passages that will bring a tear to even a calloused reader. First few pages were difficult as innovative plotting resulted in early chapters without context. Story told with elegance that prompts examination of life's inconsistencies, inherent love coupled with and unmerciful randomness. Last pages were hard to get through. Mostly because I didn't want this book to end.
