Wow! Completely different take from Huck Finn and so much better. Heart wrenching and beautifully written, I was cheering James on to his freedom.

I have put off reading this book for months. This time I made sure to read it when it was available on my OverDrive. OMGosh this book was so good. I read Tome Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn when I was a kid but this book is just amazing.

Jim the slave has decided to runaway because he heard he was going to be sold. He left behind his wife and daughter trying to get to the free land. He met up with Huck who was running from his dad and the beatings. So many things happened to Jim and Huck. Many thing ...more

The idea of Jim and other slaves faking ignorance was cool, but I wonder if the author was as well. This book read as a choppy YA book. James / Jim was no more developed than with Twain's book; he's still a caricature without depth. The author also goes to some silly places with him and Huck.

There are some dark scenes and satire, and it's worth reading, but it's not the book I envisioned. ...more
