"That's why you can't trust anyone in Evelyn Bay."

This is a slow-burn mystery. It's a small town that has seen it's share of tragedy. About 10 years ago, a massive storm hit the small coastal town. 1 teenager and 1 adult drown in a rescue boat the was tipped over. One teen girl went missing. The boy the other two had been trying to save barely survived. There are still questions with no answers and a town that has largely tried to move on but never forgotten.

Shelves: mysteries, 2021-finished

Skimming over some of the reviews of this book I don't understand the high ratings. This was my first book by this author and I was not impressed.

The overall story/plot was super slow. TImelines jumped back and forth without warning so it was hard to sometimes distinguish past to present.

The setting though was beautiful. It was set in a small coastal tight knit town in Australia. The plot is basically trying to find out how a girl named Bronte was killed. She was not from the town but from Cra ...more

Shelves: borrowed-library, borrowed-ebook, mystery

This was my first Jane Harper and the synopsis really grabbed me. I found the pace very slow and the characters hard to keep straight. My favorite characters were the women, even the mother who says such cruel things to her son. At least they breathed some life into the story.

It feels very intimate getting to know the families and neighbors in a quiet beach town but all of the red herrings and ominous flashbacks failed to keep my interest. I wanted to know what happened but I prefer my thriller ...more
