4.5 stars. Very clever and captivating book about a thief who is sprung from prison to steal something to save a kingdom.

It was a really good book and complex for a middle school book...with aspects of history, politics and social class that aren't normally addressed at this age level.

I am looking forward to the next book. This has been on my tbr for years and I wish I hadn't waiting so long.

I have seen this frequently cited as one of the all time best fantasy novels for middle grade and young adult readers. I'm afraid I did not feel that way. Half of this book was a road trip novel. We open with Gen in prison for having stolen the royal seal of the King of Sounis. The Magus of Sounis approaches Gen and proposes to him that in return for Gen's freedom, Gen will help the Magus retrieve a mythical lost treasure. This was a really fun quick read that had some fun twists. I loved the main character who says he can steal anything and then is imprisoned for doing so, and then later released to steal what is thought to be impossible to locate and take. A great read, fun for young readers and up.

When I first read this, I must not have been in the proper mood for I found it just so-so. However, I loved book 2, The Queen of Attolia, so I decided to reread this to see if my opinion would change. And it did. I'm not sure if it was because I was more familiar with the dynamics of the characters and countries or if it was a simple thing like me being more in the mood for it, but I found this one almost as good as QofA. I love Gen's voice and love the small things - the details, the deceptions ...more
