I typically like to read the book before seeing the movie, but change it up for this one. I took my daughter to see the movie when it came out in 2014, knowing I'd likely read the series at some point, but not in any hurry.
I did end up buying it, ostensibly for my daughter, when the DVD/Blu-Ray came out, but she wasn't overly enthused about reading since she'd seen the movie and knew what was going to occur. She likes surprises.

I read this before but only vaguely remembered it, and even that was a bit confused because I've also seen the movie somewhere in there. The biggest problem is that I found Thomas rather unpleasant -- he's not compassionate, often selfish, and doesn't really seem to think of other people as independent creatures, just as tools or inconveniences. Or maybe that's the author? But Chuck was there only as a way for Thomas to feel emotion, but he only responded to what Thomas wanted right then and wou

I'm glad that I was finally able to find out why everyone is so excited about this book, but ultimately, it just wasn't for me. Part of the problem was that a lot of the drama revolved around the Grievers, which were some strange monster/robots that I was never really able to picture. I was definitely interested in some of the characters, but none were fully developed and several were indistinguishable. The the pacing was pretty slow in the beginning, but I was hooked as we raced toward the e ...more

I started reading this series for the fact the bookclub at school (which I help run) will undoubtedly be talking about this series and seeing the movies, but I've actually given up. Which nearly never happens. We're talking like 0.001%. I've never thrown a book across the room or at a wall. I've finished horrible things, but I have someone lovely who really does talk me out of doing terrible things to my brain.
I made it halfway through book two, and my opinions haven't changed in the slightest. ...more

Overall the book is a solid 3 stars. I would have rated it 4 stars if the writing had picked up/plot moved forward prior to chapter 48. If you are willing to stick with it, the last 100 pages are worth it. I'll read the second in the series, but I'll be finishing other books on my TBR list first.
