2.5 stars, actually. I kind of liked it, and it definitely needs a second part, as the ending and the cast of characters lead us to realise that much more is at stake—and that a storm's indeed coming.
However, I had a hard time with half the characters at least (Evie herself, Isaiah, Sam...); the romance was rather useless, not glitzy-and-glamorous-Roaring-Twenties-like; and I thought the writing style itself rested too much on 1920s slang and idioms: not something bad per se, but after a while i ...more

Really loved the historical aspect in this fast-paced, exciting book. It flowed well and the dialog really put me into the flapper era. Also, the characters were generally very well done, in particular our heroine as well as the extremely creepy villain *shiver*.
I also really liked that the book doesn't shy away from some of the taboo political themes that were rampant in that era. Well handled.

This book reminded me of how much I love Libba Bray's writing. She is so descriptive and has such beautiful prose in her stories! The setting for this one was particularly interesting and she completely immersed me in the surroundings, the slang, the dress, and the attitude of the time period. Not to mention the mystery of the plot! This was a really fun read and one I would definitely read again.

This book quickly bounced up into favorite, long for YA and incredibly devourable, and it's only the beginning. I was warned of this before I started it. It's the beginning of the story only, they said, and I waved my hands and only half listened, until I was fifteen percent from the end of the book (devouring it hours a day), screaming at my Twitter "How can I almost be done, we're only beginning????"

I was a little apprehensive to start this book, but since I had heard so many people on Booktube rave about it, I decided to give it a chance. It was so enthralling. I loved the setting, loved the characters, and love the premise. I only thing I didn't like was the length. I'm not sure when I will continue the series, but I am very interested in finding out what happened to Evie, Jericho, Memphis, Theta, and the rest of the Diviners.

I would have given this one 5 *'s --- it's an interesting, well-told story --- but for the last 30 pages. The last 30 pages were pure and total setup for the sequel, introducing new elements, partially explaining old elements, and telling the reader: if you want to know how these plot elements resolve, READ THE SEQUEL! *annoyance* This was unnecessary. I would have read the sequel anyways. ...more

I loved this book so much. The characters were interesting (Evie is my favorite out of the lot but they are all great in their own ways) to start with. The setting and plot together is just as interesting. And the scenes with the killer are legitimately scary. I can only imagine what those scenes sound like on audio book.
The sequel is a instant buy for me.

I think that before I tackle the second one I may have to re-read this. There's a lot going on in this book!
