"The Hobbit" is the one book of Tolkien's that I felt captured the spirit of Middle Earth as he imagined it, and should be read before "The Lord of the Rings", if only to give the reader a reason to slog through the beginning of the trilogy afterward.
Bilbo is an alive character in this book, and he actually has adventures in a timely manner, without the long, overly drawn-out amount of years that we have to suffer through in "The Lord of the Rings". And maybe it's the shorter length of the book, ...more

You can't help but like The Hobbit, there is a reason it's a classic. However, when compared to its sequel The Lord of the Rings the writing in the book definitely reveals that it was written for a younger group--charming but lacking the substance that imbues the Lord of the Rings. This Annotated version is a great choice for all of us who are re-reading the book and want to know all the detailed background, tidbits, and fun information that went into the publishing of The Hobbit.

Blog comment: "I've never seen Zorba the Greek, or read it in fact. Perhaps I will add it to my list, though the list has not been moving so quickly what with all the jobs. No Logo is taking me forever, interspersed with small amounts of the women travel anthology. I tried three times to read the Hobbit and never got more than 100 pgs through it. Don't know why really."
