Professor Trelawney, the mysterious, spooky, fortune-telling creep who is Harry’s Divination teacher, sees a Grim, the symbol of death, in Harry’s tea leaves during his first day back and tells him he will die. Also, Harry wakes up on Christmas morning, a Firebolt, the brand new, fastest broom on the market, is wrapped with Harry’s name in it and it was sent from outside of the school. Could it be Sirius? When Sirius is spotted inside the school, is he still trying to kill Harry, even if he send the Firebolt?
The plot of this story was intense. There were twists and turns at every corner, keeping you turning every page until the gang figures the problem out. The end is quite surprising and will make you want to read the fourth book right away.
Rowling develops such a spirit in each character, it makes you feel like you are one of them. Their thoughts are always everywhere, although it’s told by a narrator. You can really tell what the character’s feelings are in the setting and throughout the book. For example, the feelings are popping out at the reader when Draco Malfoy, Harry’s worst enemy, and Harry, Hermione, and Ron are arguing. Honestly, it makes you want to punch Malfoy in the face every time he says something nasty and rude to the gang. Throughout the book, you can tell each character’s personality. Hermoine is intelligent and sassy, Ron is mouthy and abnoxious, while Harry, usually, keeps his thoughts to himself and is always sneaking out for an adventure. Rowling shows the voice perfectly.
The style of the story is very unique. Rowling interprets her characters through narration and has successfully developed the scenery in very descriptive ways, sometimes over two pages long. Each character is unique in their own quirky ways.
Overall, Rowling did an excellent job on the 3rd book of the series. You’ll want to keep turning the pages and the end will leave you wanting more.
