Again, I'm reviewing this later than when I first finished it, but if I had to give a proper rating... it would be 3.5 stars. It's not that I didn't enjoy the book as much or that it didn't age well. It's more like I still have no memory of the book, except a couple scenes/important plot things that affect the rest of the series. But the details, nuances aren't as clear to me as I think back. Mainly, for a time traveling story, it feels a little too messy and oversimplified at parts. My main qualms is that the plot feels messy/convoluted in that they have to go back in time to get a creature that will help create a cure. (SPOILERS I GUESS AFTER THIS BUT WHO CARES?)

And then things just snowball into things that prevent that from happening, but in the end it doesn't matter because of magic that can clone without taking something from the creature to then clone. It just felt like a wave of the hand and all that effort to get the lemur wasn't paid off. It just felt too simple at the end there. But then it's still complicated because past!Opal is unaccounted for, but she must go back in time at some point in order for book 2 and especially book 4's events to occur. And no one addresses this?? Maybe it does in the later books and I just don't remember, but it just feels like such an awkward hanger that it doesn't build suspense, but just leaves you unsatisfied.

I suppose the thing I remember most from this book was that the events lead to young Artemis to begin his scheme for book 1 which is a nice circular story telling/paradox if you will, that makes you feel clever knowing it. Also I remember being shocked when Holly kissed Artemis when I first read it and I still made happy squeals when it happened. I know there's a technical age difference, which perhaps isn't so good, but if no romance was supposed to be viewed between Holly and Artemis at all for the whole series, this moment shouldn't have been included. But I genuinely always liked the two of them and I think when I first read it when it first came out, I was pleased and it felt natural to me. Anyways, it might be forgotten in the later books and I just don't remember.

Overall, it was a fun read I guess. It's not like I felt frustrated or wanted to give up, so this book was pretty average. ...more
