Review 7/4/22:

This one is a solid 4/5 stars to me. I think the thing I remembered the most about this book, after the reappearance of Rachel Elizabeth Dare, was the blue hair brush and also the Ariadne parallel. The rest of it I didn't remember much going into this. But I'm so glad to see Tyson back again. He really is such a good addition and I love the perspective he offers to Percy.

When it comes to the budding teenage romance, I guess it's typical teenage jealousy, which is understandable but not too unique. Right now some things are described so vaguely. I don't remember if Annabeth kissing Percy was in this book or in Titan's Curse, but it was just such a short line of they kissed that you can't tell what the emotion was behind it. Which might have been the point because at this point right now, Percy is still really oblivious when it comes to romance.

Anyways, going into this book, I really thought that Annabeth didn't actually get a prophecy from the Oracle and that she might've made up something for the quest. But I guess I was wrong. I guess there's some other female characters I've read that would've done something like that, so being proven otherwise is perhaps a better way to go since it kept me on my toes.

I liked the little references to Herakles/Hercules' 12 labors, especially with the ranch with the horses and other animals. I like the reference to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs since I'm a fan of Colorado in general. With Dedalus's story and Pan's appearance and the reveal with Luke, I thought all of these were good story points that added some drama to the simplicity of going through the maze.

Even though I wasn't a fan of Nico doing the "you betrayed me" stuff at the end of book 3, I'm glad he wasn't doing the full-on revenge route in this book. It's hinted at that, but I'm glad to see that this book deviates from the trope and it redeems some of what I disliked about the reveal.

Overall, it was a really good read. It's a bit of filler in some way, but slowly you realize it is connected in different parts and it sets up a lot to have the big finish with the last book. Oh and I did like at the end, the narrator sort of went back to the Dionysus voice from the first book. Just having serious-mode Dionysus was a nice change and I think it sets up the mood of how serious things are getting for the gods. ...more
