“I ♥ Roarke” tee-shirt from www.jdrobb.com

★★★★★ Okay, I can’t believe I read the paperback instead of listening to the fabulous Ms. Ericksen on audiobook, but I did. I had to have my Roarke fix, LOL! Some of you may know, I did the stupidest thing and, after listening to the first few chapters, erased my library copy of the downloadable audiobook of this one from my iPod/Touch, putting me back on the waitlist at #5. I checked the stacks – and even the hardcopies were checked out! Eep! So, I ...more

Let me first say that being able to switch back and forth between my kindle book and my audible audiobook is such an addictive thing.
Ok, now that that's out of the way, I'll get to this review. I had put this series aside for about 2 years and now I'm getting back into it. I read the first 8 books pretty much back to back and I think I got burned out. Now that I've had some distance from it and I'm returning, I know why I devoured them so quickly when I first started.

The villains in this one were too tricky and that's what did them in. By trying to sidetrack Eve with Zeke Peabody's problems that gave her all the clues to piece the mystery together.
Loved the Shebody/McNab dynamic - and finally it happened!! Funny how Eve was one of the last to figure it out.
Loved Mavis talking to Zeke - I never knew she had it in her, but now I can see why Eve has admitted her to friend status. Whilst I've liked Mavis in the past, I could never really see them as friends, but ...more

Terrorists calling themselves after Cassandra of Greek Mythology are bombing targets in NYC and Eve and team are on a race against time to stop them.
I love this series, though this is not my favorite of them so far. Maybe it is the fictional bombings and destruction of the Pentagon written well before 9/11, but it still triggers things. But it was still a good read. Oh, and would have liked a little more Mavis!

Heart in my throat at the end...

In a series like In Death where you have a gazillion books (okay, well forty plus anyway)some are going to be better reads than others. With the ensemble cast having their hands full with terrorists with a penchant for Greek mythology, the arrival of Peabody's brother, hot make up sex after a relationship misunderstanding for Eve and Roarke and the simmering sexual tension between Peabody and McNab finally boiling over, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST!

I understand that the series is currently at 30 some odd books. I wonder how can it keep interesting for that long? But then I pick up the next in the series. I'm instantly enthralled by the characters continued growth and development. This is maybe my favorite so far. Peabody still gets the best lines, Roarke is still too perfect, and Eve still kicks ass.
Good fun and a good read. ...more
