I'm on the fence with this book. I really wanted to love it, but I only liked it, sort of.... I guess I will have to give it 3.5 stars; the ending had some strong points that left me wanting more. Well, the whole book did actually, but not in a good way like the ending did! I felt like I was dropped in the middle of a new world and knew nothing about it and worse, couldn't learn anything about it from what I was seeing or reading in this case.

Entertaining. I can see why the series cultivated a loyal fan club.
Anita, as a heroine, at least when the book was first published in 1993, is unique. A heroine with certain male personality traits, a smart mouth, a sharper wit and completely in touch with her fear and mortality. In fact, she wears her mortality like a badge of honor. She's human. And a barely over five-foot tall woman. And she can kill the things that go bump in the night. She's completely annoying some times - most of the tim ...more

Ok, I thought that this was entertaining. I've been warned against this series because people feel like it deteriorated in later books but this one was good and fun. I thought Anita was a *tad* annoying but overall I enjoyed it. I listened to this on audio and the narrator, Kimberly Alexis, was awesome. She had a great handle on the voice, did wonderful accents, and had a great concept of timing and spacing. I'm not sure if I'll continue this series, but I'll be more likely to do so if the same

Like most people have said, this book really does remind you of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". You have Anita who is known as "The Executioner" and feared by vampires having to infiltrate the vapire society to find a murder. This leads her to have a run in with Jean Claude, the owner of a vampire club. The book is full of action as Anita is caught in a battle for her life with master vamps, shifters, and friends who might actually be enemies. Overall I didn't think that this book was a bad start to

4 stars (would be 3.5 if I could) because I like the genre & have a sense of nostalgia for the first five or so books in the series before it starts getting weird & PWP-centric. Anita's internalized misogyny isn't as apparent. There is a hell of a lot of police bootlicking tho...
