Ah Zarek. You want to be accepted but are too afraid of being hurt so you strike back first. Zarek had the worst childhood I've ever read about and somehow still has a core of good in him. Astrid has been assigned to judge him and has never found a man innocent. But she does her job well and learns what makes him tick.

The secondary characters are great as well. Sasha, the protector. Jesse - I hope he has a book of his own. Otto and the squires. Even the villain was interesting. But best of all,
