This book is a combination of contemporary and historical fictions. Hannah Heath, a book conservationist, was asked to work on the Sarajevo Haggadah, a book which has been lost for many years. The contemporary part of of the book follows Hannah in her work, investigating and trying to construct the history of the Sarajevo Haggadah, and her personal lives.

Geraldine Brooks always writes an interesting story. In the case of People of the Book I have to say I enjoyed this one more than either of her previous novels that I have had the opportunity to read, Year of Wonders and March. I really liked the construction of this novel. I enjoyed how each little item Hanna found within the pages of the Haggadah had it's own historical narrative wound within the tapestry of the modern-day story of the Sarajevo Haggadah's stabilization and display.
