Karen Rose writes some amazing stories but they are very hard on the reader - serial killers, spousal abuse, child abuse etc. This one is a great story about a mother who finally escapes from her abusive cop husband and successfully hides out for 7 years with her son until her car is found and gets him thinking that maybe she was smart enough to outwit him. Much as you can have a movie diminished by someone overacting, this book was made less than what it could have been by overwriting. So many superlatives and paragraphs where sentences would have sufficed. A difficult tale of spousal abuse that ends in a bloody scene all the way around. I'm sure her later books are better and I very well may continue with the series as the last third was far superior to the first third of this one.

Great book, with a pretty dark subject matter and a major a-hole villain, like most of KR's books.. Unfortunately, I read the series out of order, so I already knew what happened at the end:-o 4-4.5*
