I echo several other reviews when I say that this book took me three months to read, but it was definitely worth it. I love Dickens' descriptions, and all the weird, hilarious minor characters he created. I disagree with most, however, in that I truly came to dislike Esther, the only character who speaks to us directly. Everyone seems to love her, but she got on my nerves. Don't hate me, friends. That took me a monstrously long time to finish! It was slow to start (as with all Dickens’ novels!) and until you’ve grasped the pace and language, you really have to work in persistence to get through it. Most of all, I enjoyed the mystery he presented in this novel... I didn’t quite like Inspector Bucket at the start but when he set out the solution to the mystery & arresting the perpetrator, Wow! I really feel that this review won’t (and can’t) do the book justice, because I really struggled with this audiobook. I listened to the free LibriVox edition read by Mil Nicholson. She gives every character it’s separate voice, which is a good thing. But somehow her voice didn’t hold my attention. I couldn’t concentrate on listening to the audiobook; or at least I couldn’t remember long after listening what I had actually listened to.
