I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of mostly-20's/Depression-era stories by Callaghan. These stories are at the opposite end of the scale from Alistair MacLeod's "epics in a bottle" which I also admire so much. They are like little vignettes, snapshots of an event in peoples' lives. Why do people do the things they do? What's going on in someone's inner life and how does that relate to how they behave, how they interact and communicate (or fail to) with those around them?
