For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.

This book defeated me. I got about half way through and finally gave up, beyond boring. I found the dialogue stilted and uninteresting. I know Hemingway is known for economizing, which I don't have a problem with but it was just downright boring!!

Robert Jordan is an American volunteer fighting in the Spanish Civil War. He has been given the job of blowing a bridge in four days time with the help of a guerilla band living in the mountains. Exciting stuff - yes? No. I am usually a huge fan of Hemingway, and I was kind of saving this book as one I was guaranteed to love.
