This Depression-era story of a drifter who becomes involved with the wife of a Greek entrepreneur launched the career of author Cain and helped to pioneer the noir crime genre. The steamy plot moves quickly and is still entertaining today. Don't bother waiting for a postman to appear in the story; the title is a non-sequitur that is open to interpretation (read the Wikipedia entry for a detailed discussion).

I knew the basic theme beforehand, but the actual plot became familiar when I saw Ossessione (1943). I've also seen the American version with Lana Turner and John Garfield, so there wasn't anything new left when I started to read this. In this case seeing the film(s) before reading the book was even worse, because I couldn't really get anything out of this psychologically or in a deeper level than just the events.

I never saw the movie, so was not very familiar with the book. Kept expecting a postman to show up in the story, but there is not postman. A good noir story.
This tale about double-cross and murder is a bit dated now, but still a good fast read.
The torrid story of Frank Chambers, the amoral drifter, Cora, the sullen and brooding wife, and Nick Papadakis, the amiable but inconvenient husband, has become a classic of its kind.
