Rostand's play purporting to be based on the life of the real Cyrano de Bergerac makes for a fun theater experience and there are several very good film adaptations, but as a reading experience without the actors to bring it to life it's a bit dry. The memorable scenes with action and romance made this a surprise hit in 1890s France. You may not be aware that this play brought the word "panache" into the popular lexicon.

After watching the trailer for the 2022 musical/movie, I couldn’t wait to watch it! The music, and the cinematography, looked amazing. But first, I wanted to read the novel so that I knew what to expect. First off, it was a play, not a novel, which isn’t really a big deal because I’ve read through plays before.
