This controversial novella that was widely censored upon its initial 1889 release and which prompted Teddy Roosevelt to refer to its author as a "sexual moral pervert" is one of Tolstoy's later works, appearing about a decade after his spiritual awakening, as more fully documented in A Confession. In an Epilogue published about a year after the novella, Tolstoy confirms that he meant the story to be an argument for chastity and abstinence -
