'Twas acceptable as an eerie, Poe-like mystery, The real mystery for me, however, was the extensive leisure time M. Bermutier, the Judge, expended to investigate and interrogate Sir John Rowell. I should think a Judge would be too busy to find the time for such matters –– but then, his role adds credence to the fiction. Perhaps I'm caviling too much; but, then again, it was a short story.
