A cold, remote father who believes no man could love his daughter because she is plain.

A loyal, timid young woman who will do anything her father requires.

A charming, but unsuitable man, who wants to marry her, but also seems to want her money.

There is nothing about this story that should appeal to me. I am not a fan of romance, or the idea that a woman's value lies in her beauty, and the marriage she makes. But, somehow, this book grabbed me from page one. I loved it.

This novel was a great read. It was a great unforgettable and beautifully expressed. I loved everything about the novel from every characters' personality, and details of the setting in the period of time when women had no voice or power. Seeing Catherine Slooper grow from a plain naive, loving little girl transforms in a cold & heart-torned woman from years and pain.

Washington Square is a real eye and mind opener. And I would recommend anyone to read this book. This novel has been in my reading
