RJ - Slayer of Trolls
"The Classic Tale of Romantic Suspense" cover blurb doesn't lie. The first half of the book is dedicated to the "romantic" part, with long lush Home & Garden-porn descriptions of the lavish decor and grounds of the fictional English country estate of Manderley, interwoven with the endless neurotic blatherings of the World's Most Insecure Narrator which can be best summarized as "he loves me, he loves me not." The suspense part picks up in the second half and has some devious twists and turns of ...more

"A dreamer, I walked enchanted, and nothing held me back."

From the very first moment, Rebecca the novel wraps you around its finger just like Rebecca the woman did with both humans and animals. First, a dream sequence in Manderley. Then, in Monte Carlo of the past, the nameless narrator makes the hasty decision to marry Maxim de Winter, the owner of Manderley. In the vast estate, her insecurities and sense of powerlessness are only worsened by the manipulation and coldness of the skeletal cr

Not at all the love story I was expecting -as so many people have said this is one of their favourites, a most loved book. Very well conceived, characters, setting & language. Mrs Danvers is truly creepy & reminded me of a slice of Nurse Ratched !! Keen to hear your vies as well @MagdaRozenthal

2.5 stars. I admit I am not a big fan of mysterys so maybe that tainted my reading of this book but I really was getting annoyed with the book while reading it. I realize the author was trying to be descriptive in her writing. I kept thinking GET TO THE POINT. Although the narrator was described as young and naive, I just found her to be stupid, especially with Mrs. Danver's setting her up at the ball, it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. Only after Rebecca's boat was found did I find ...more

Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me.

So, here I am, nearly 50, and reading Rebecca for the first time. I know. I know!. It's one of the few novels that my mother (who usually has no time for fiction) loves, too. I did see the movie, in college, so I know the basic plot, but not the intricacies. Perhaps there's not really much point in my writing an actual

The writing is good as well as the pacing, but about halfway through I couldn't stand the heroine any longer and had to stop and read the sparknotes summary of the rest of the book. I think I came to this one too late... I think I must have read other novels that stole some of du Maurier's ideas (Mary Stewart? Victoria Holt?), because they weren't fresh to me (such a shame!) and the trope of the shrinking violet is not one I enjoy. I wish I had read it in high school as I think I would ha

Meh. I've read better. It did perk up when the twist came along because I wasn't expecting it. I may give it another go later in October. ...more
