You are going to die.
That's the first thing Marcus Zusak, with Death as his narrator, tells us in this beautiful, devastating story. Inevitably, any story of Nazi Germany is going to be dark. This story is no exception, but Zusak reminds us that there were also kids joking, swearing, and playing soccer; and good, average, everyday people who decided to do the right thing even as evil consumed their world.

An amazing book. So touching and real. I don't even know how to describe it.
It's a really powerful story that everyone MUST read. It's not only about World War II, is about life - and how easily it could come to an end. It's about people that leaves traces in our hearts and how when they are not with us anymore it feels as the end of the world (and pretty much it is). It's about reading - even in the darkness days. It's about thievery - sometimes that's what keeps you alive. It's about so much ...more

Summary: A story about a little German girl living through WWII in Germany. Nice perspectives and very engaging fairy tale style story (very dark though).
Things I liked:
Death as a narrator (great choice).
Foreshadowing was used very well with a few red herrings as well.
Well constructed moments that definitely pulled at the heart strings.
Good pace and varied story telling techniques.
Things I thought could be improved:
Sometimes I felt some of the moments were a bit too constructed. This is compe ...more

An amazing book. Zusak is an incredibly talented writer. It was refreshing and interesting to read a book set in Nazi Germany that's not told from a Jewish perspective. I loved it, and will be reading this book again. My biggest question is why this book is considered young adult? While I hope that my daughter reads this book one day, I'm not sure that this is material for a nine to twelve year old.
