What is so fascinating about the circus? I think it dates back to childhood days where we are so impressionable that the pomp, the animals, and weird & wonderful truly grabbed our hearts and souls. It’s also a very special treat which makes it utterly precious as memories. My love for circus in literature also dates back to childhood –does anyone remember Mr Galliano's Circus by Enid Blyton? One of my childhood’s favourite!

I suppose there are two approaches to this book. Either you knew about Micah and Gene before you started (and I'm not going to use spoilers here, even if you didn't know, you would by reading past page twenty), or you didn't.

I didn't; I've read it because I was intrigued by the circus setting, and so I was quite surprised to discover a story that took to dealing with transgender issues in a sensitive way. ...more

This is one of those novels that paints a picture of the surroundings so well that you can easily imagine you are there. The difficulty lies with the story or the lack thereof. Not a whole lot actually happens, and too much time is spent on the backstory which isn't central to the plot. Don't look for supernatural, science fiction, or romantic elements because there aren't any. Just a straightforward tale about a teen who wants to join the circus with a few frills.
