This was a mother daughter buddy read. We wanted to read the book before we watched the movie. We both really enjoyed it. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the ending. I was expecting more... I don't know. Just more. But other than that it was good.

I tossed up between three and four stars for this. I enjoyed it - it was a good story with great suspense. I liked the way the past and the present were interleaved so, although you knew that Malorie and the children were alone right at the outset, therefore something had happened to the rest of the housemates, you didn't find out how or why until the end. But I found both the ending and the message of the book a bit unsatisfying. I had read reviews so I knew not everything was resolved and you

I'm not one for horror but this had a great atmosphere - all that creeping malice was thrilling. The worst part is those who have seen it & survived, that is truly terrifying & made it feel personal. I can't imagine how people could have survived: it's not just the living in the dark, it's that you weren't safe even then. I would have liked to know what the hell was going on - what the creatures were, where they came from -, & a better prognosis for the future would have been good, too.

An enjoyable tale of survival in a scary world where people are few but monsters are many. Well-written, suspenseful and page-turning. An author to watch.

Malorie lives in a house with her two, four year old children. They can't go outside unless blindfolded or else they will go insane, like most of the human population has. One day she and the children leave the house and take a trip on the river. The book alternates between the river trip and what happened four years ago to have Malorie wind up in this situation. The book is very creepy and suspenseful.

The flashbacks are really great parts. I like some of the differences from the movie, some I didn't.
The bar scene, the birth scene were both really great.
Stressful and tense, the author really manages to capture the confusion in the moment from Malorie's perspective.

This book has been on my TBR list for a long time. I finally decided to read it before watching the movie...I’m sure the book will be better than the movie tho.
