I would recommend this one on audio, especially if you're a Gilmore Girls fan, because Edward Herrmann narrates. It was a pleasure to listen to his voice for 14 hours :)
The story of this man's life, from a rising star runner in high school on the way to the Olympics, to a pilot in WWII to a prisoner of war in Japan was captivating. I haven't seen the movie, but I can't imagine it compares to the book. I felt like I was there with Louis for the ups and downs of his life and I found myself cheerin ...more

Powerful, emotional book. I loved Louie's personality and spunk. I enjoyed the stories of his misbehavior in his youth, and the survival instinct that he showed on the raft.
It really bothered me to learn about his constant abuse in the POW camps. I wanted to stop reading because of that (and that's part of why I hesitated to read it in the beginning), but since it was a non-fiction book, and Louie really had endured that, I felt that it wouldn't be fair to him not to follow the full story.

Wow! The story of long-distance runner Louis Zamperini and his fellow POWs held in various Japanese camps during World War II was alternating mesmerizing and shocking, but mostly shocking. It was shocking in brutality, shocking in starvation, and shocking in overall treatment of these prisoners by various guards especially the man they called 'the Bird.'

My thanks to a friend who sent this wonderful read my way. This is first and foremost the story of Louis Zamperini, a troubled child who becomes a troubled adolescent rescued by none other than someone who loves him, his brother, Peter. Peter recognizes his brother's talent for running, usually away from trouble, and channels it into competition. It is as a runner that Louie finds himself winning many races and finally competes in an Olympics but WWII intervenes, changing his life forever.
