How does one write about a book that so imprints the heart and mind? There is love, ignorance and cruel treatment of the less fortunate. Rachel is a six-year-old who has been diagnosed with leprosy. She doesn't understand what is happening - only that her uncle has leprosy, too, and that her parents can no longer be with her. This book made me want to learn more about Leprosy (or Hansen's disease, as it's referred to in the later sections of the book). I didn't know there were places where sufferers were taken against there will to live out the rest of their (mostly) short lives.

Rachel is sent there when she is seven, and has a milder form of the disease, allowing here to live longer than all the people she meets and becomes close to on the island. It must be heartbreaking to have a disease and watch that disease kil ...more

Great fictional story based on real people dealing with leprosy and all that goes with it from 1890s to 1950s. We get to know Rachel and everything she goes through during her lifetime --many things which are truly heart breaking. Excellent read!
