This has held up really well. It’s well constructed, the rabbit characters are great, and it delivers so many great payoffs as Hazel grows in wisdom and authority. It does need better women, and the sequel Tales helps a bit with that, but it’s a great example of talking animals, a genre that lies between mainstream and fantasy literature.

This is probably the book that has been on my TBR shelf the longest - probably a good 30 years or more. Maybe that's because I generally don't like anthropomorphism, but I'm glad to say this is a delightful exception.
I totally bought into the world of Hazel and Fiver. And when I thought of them, I thought of them as rabbits, not some sort of human/rabbit. Adams does such an amazing job of building this universe from a rabbit's perspective. I loved their adventures, escaping almost certain death ...more

Fiver is a rabbit who has visions of the future. He convinces his brother Hazel and a few other rabbits that something bad is going to happen to their warren so they set out to create a new warren. The beginning of the book was a bit slow for me but it picked up when the rabbits start dealing with the Efrafa warren. I liked most of the characters and found myself rooting for the Watership Down rabbits. I didn't like the stories the rabbits told each other for amusement.

4**** and a ❤
Adams novel telling of the society of wild rabbits is poetic and beautiful. I loved Fiver.
