This definitely gets a 4.5 star rating. It's a unique combination of cozy mystery, romance, and magic. The book follows the usual style of a cozy mystery, with lots of character building and less focus on the mechanics of the murder. Our heroine, Ella Mae, is implicated in the murder and must try to clear her name. She is the owner of a brand new pie shop in her hometown in Georgia, where she returned after leaving her husband following his infidelity. Her pies are magical, seeming to be infused ...more
Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review)
In this book (the first in a series), we have the protagonist Ella Mae arriving back in her hometown after she finds her husband cheating on her, she arrived back at her Mum's house with the clothes on her back, her dirty clothes from that day's cooking and her puppy Charleston Chew (Chewy for short), she is welcomed back by her Mum, three aunts and a good family friend and after explaining they come up with the idea of The Charmed Pie Shoppe (mainly pies but with a small eating/coffee area as w ...more

First in a new series by a mystery author who writes under several pseudonyms. Set in a small Georgia town this story was too contrived. There was a metaphor or simile on nearly every page. The main character, Ella Mae, was far too clueless ignoring or explaining away the incidents of magic around her. After resenting her nemesis from childhood, Lauralyn inexplicably acquiesced to Ella Mae's demands and rights a wrong done to someone else. Customers reactions to Ella Mae's pies was over the top. ...more

New series from Ellery Adams. Ella Mae returns to her hometown after finding her husband cheating on her. Baking soothes her broken heart and releases untapped magic. An unfortunate murder puts her in the spotlight. Eloquent writing. 3.5 stars

Pies and Prejudice Book 1 - Charmed Pie Shoppe

Ella Mae has just moved back to her childhood home of Havenwood, GA after catching her husband cheating with two very young women! While she is there, her mother and aunts convince her to open a Pie Shoppe. They end up in a bidding war with the local vet who is engaged to Ella Mae's bully from high school. They win the war and get the building and she opens her shop, but the vet ends up dead and she is suspect number one. When another person dies in

This book took a bit to get into, I think somewhat because the heroine spent most of the book trying to figure herself out. I loved her family and her puppy, Chewie. The mystery was solved sooner than I expected. The pies sounds marvelous. But it took me a long time to finish as there was never anything pulling me back in. I do have to say I'm starting to get a bit tired of the "evil nemesis" plot point showing up in so many cozy mysteries nowadays. ...more

I'm not a Southerner but this has every southern stereotype none to man included in the story. I found this a little over the top and irritating. Unfortunately I didn't like Ella Mae at all. She is rather dimwitted to be a heroine in a cozy mystery. I find it hard to believe that she solved the mystery. Heck it took her over 30 years to realize her family (and herself) had magic. Definitely not a series I'll be continuing. ...more
