I'll probably add more to this review later. This book is still making me lose sleep days after finishing it, and I need a bit more time to process.
For now: five stars, no question. I love books about books, and this one makes me want to hop on the next flight to Barcelona. ...more

I cannot begin to describe this book. It is passionate and thought-provoking, intelligent and emotional, full of love, lust, political intrigue, interwoven plots and twists & turns everywhere. The ending is satisfactory without being "too neatly" tied up. The writing is full of wonderful description (it does have a decidedly "Spanish" feel). Makes me wish I understood Spanish well enough to read it in the original.
In short, this is a great story, well-written. The "art of reading" is NOT dying ...more

This book was just amazing! I don't even think a written review would give this book the credit it deserves.
I enjoyed the characters, the writing style, the plot twists. Yup I really don't have anything bad to say about this book.
I don't feel I can go into much more detail than that, as it is a mystery and I don't want to give anything away.
Let me just say that I have had this book on my bookshelf for a LONG time and I wish I would have picked It up sooner! =) ...more

The characters, the plot and specially the extremely powerful and clever brand of storytelling deployed here seem to have left me under a spell that I can't remember experiencing with any other book I've read in the last 25 years. The promise of the magic first few pages, a stunning and seductive journey to a wonderful place called "the cemetery of forgotten books", not only doesn't let down, but steadily builds up into a magnificent saga of intrigue, romance, passion, murder, satire and even sp

So I don't really write "fancy" book reviews. The sappy sentimentalist deep inside me had to make some comments though.
I adored this book. I was hooked from the start, and after starting several books which could NOT keep my attention lately, that is saying a lot.
This novel had twisty turny parts I did not see coming, which for me is a big deal. I usually guess. I'm that annoying friend you watch movies with who blurts out the big plot-twisty ending in the middle of the movie and ruins it. I wa ...more

10 year old Daniel Sempere found a treasure. A book titled ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ by Julian Carax which took him to the wonderful world of words. In seeking to know the author and other books by him, Daniel stumbled onto a sinister world where a man with no face was burning all Julian Carax’s books, a homeless man who is not who he seems to be, a beautiful but blind lady, and a policy inspector eaten by jealousy and power.
At first unknowingly and then unable to resist, Daniel was drawn into t ...more

OMG! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I was crying in the end, and that usually is a good sign ;-)
Carlos Ruiz Zafón has managed to create a wonderful story, and the different narratives give so much more depth and color and flavor to the story... In the end I liked many characters I hated in the beginning, because their choices and actions and thoughts were explained as the same happenings were explained by the different people involved in them... and...
