Coelho has some quirky characters in this story especially apathic Veronika who decides to take her own life and ends up in Villette, a mental hospital. Coelho has personal knowledge of this lifestyle since his parents committed him to a mental hospital on 3 occasions when he wanted to become an artist.

I actually found this book surprisingly enjoyable. I am sure I have read it before - probably many years ago - and I was aware that it was a book designed to 'make you think', but it's life affirming message was readable and subtle enough not to make the book a drag. Veronika attempts suicide not because she's depressed but because she sees life as mundane, repetitive and meaningless. Given the title I thought this might be rather depressing, but ultimately it's a story about realising what you have before it's too late. It also brought home to me power of lies.
