This is the story of German occupation of Denmark and the rounding up of the Jews as seen from the eyes of a 10 year old Danish girl who is protecting her best friend and her family from the Nazis. It's a book that makes you stop and think how you would react in such circumstances. It's a quick read and well worth it. ...more

The story is told quite simply from the viewpoint of Annemarie who lives in Copenhagen with her parents and whose best friend is Ellen Rosen, a Jewish girl. They are used to living in oc ...more

This read I paused to appreciate the craft that went into this 10 year old's view of WWII in Copenhagen. Our protagonist is one of the families that helped Jewish Danes escape when the Nazi's finally cracked down, so she's not in as much danger. Her family helps her, including her younger sister who serves as the role model for innocence when talking to German soldiers. It's a gem of a book. ...more

3.5 stars. The afterword, explaining how much of the story was fiction versus fact was very interesting. That most of the story is fact was enlightening.
