This is a story about a monster. Not a dragon or a mythological beast, but a very real, very destructive monster--crystal meth--that takes hold of seventeen-year-old Kristina Snow and transforms her into her reckless alter-ego Bree. Based on her own daughter's addiction to crystal meth, Ellen Hopkins' novel-in-verse is a vivid, transfixing look into teenage drug use. Told in Kristina's voice, it provides a realistic portrayal of the tortured logic of an addict.

I love Ellen Hopkins. She isn't afraid to address the hard topics. And drug addiction is a hard topic. This book made me glad that I have never experimented with drugs. Or ever had a boyfriend who pressured me to do something I didn't want to do... or made me feel like I should be doing something that I shouldn't be.
Ellen Hopkins really knows how to pull on your heartstrings. The choices and decisions that Kristina (or Bree) make are all ones that I would never want to make. It was hard to watch ...more

Crank by Ellen Hopkins (2004)
A great read for those interested in realistic fiction that deals with drugs, depression, rape and the cycle of abuse. These books get a lot of hype and having finally read this one, I agree that they are pretty deserving of said hype... I think that some people might feel that they can't relate to the Kristina/Bree because they haven't been addicts before, but I disagree. Even taking out the drug use, the stuff that Kristina/Bree go through are all things that I exp ...more

a very moving book. this book is about a teens struggle with "crank" or meth. it details how she becomes a different person. it goes into great detail about how she feels while high, but also how she feels as she is coming down. most importantly, it details what she goes through, what she loses, due to her addiction. the size of the may put you off, but it's not that long of a book, it's just the way the book is written. it looks as if it is written as a poem, in stanzas.

I thought it was a little hard to read, only because the style it's written in. The words themselves were easy to read and understand, but the fact that the words are put in shapes and designs made it harder for me to read.
A really good book that shows how easy it can be to let one bad choice change everything though. Almost scary to think how easy it can be to fall victim to the monster. ...more

Knowing people who have been drug addicts I can relate to some of this. It was very chilling to read how deeply meth can make you crave it. You really feel bad for Kristina even though a lot of what happens is her own doing. You can see the times she does try to stay away even though she does not manage to.

Cannot wait to read the sequel!!!
