I just love 11-year-old Flavia de Luce, who relies on her keen powers of observation (and a more than a little knowledge of chemistry) to solve yet another murder (or two) in Bishop’s Lacey. Among the happenings and characters she encounters in this outing: a child who died by accidental hanging some years back; the “witch” who lives in the woods; the boy’s mother, deranged by grief; a master puppeteer and his faithful assistant; a former German POW; ...more

I enjoyed this second in the series much more than the first one, so I'm glad I decided to give it another try. Flavia de Luce is an extremely precocious 10 (almost) 11-year-old. It is 1950 and she lives in a rambling old mansion with her father and two sisters. Flavia enjoys nothing more than a good murder, which is a good thing seeing as she manages to find herself caught up in another one. It takes a long time to set the story in this tale, but Bradley does a good job of setting things up and

2025: Loved it maybe more than the first time because I was expecting Flavia to be great. Listened to the audio this time.
2011: I liked this sequel as well as the first. Flavia was delightful, her family was bizarre, and Dogger was awesome. The mystery was intriguing & the final scene where she explains everything to Inspector Hewitt is funny. Love Flavia's observations. One of my favs was when she's told that everyone for 50 miles around knows her rep & she's surprised it's not 100. ...more

Flavia is up to her old tricks again, solving crimes and getting into devilish chemical troubles! This second book in the Flavia series is another solid and entertaining work. I didn't find this book as draggy in the beginning, but I also didn't find the climax of the book to be very nail biting either. The first book definitely was more of a page turner. I also found myself distracted while reading this book as I thought about Flavia's family, and whether or not I liked them or not. Tragedy def

The second Flavia deLuce mystery. This time a puppeteer's van breaks down Bishop's Lacey and in order to pay for his van repairs he agrees to do a puppet show at the church. Murder soon follows. I found the book to be really slow moving with not much of a mystery plot. Flavia is still overly precocious and her sisters are still brats.
