How disappointing. I really tried to like this book but couldn't do it - I felt it repelling me from the first chapter for some reason & I never recovered from it. I'm too old to force myself to finish a book I'm not enjoying, so I didn't, but I did give it a good try & skimmed quite a bit to ensure I got the gist. I've read a lot of good reviews & feel I must have been reading a different book.

Calling this book "ambitious" would be an understatement. Just when you think Walter can't possibly juggle one more thing, he throws something else up in the air. And for the most part, he manages to keep all of them going pretty well. I really enjoyed the book, loved parts of it. It begins in 1962 when the young owner of a tiny hotel in a (literally) hole-in-the-wall town on the Italian coast sees a Hollywood starlet arriving by boat. She believes she is dying.
