I felt as though this entire book was written just to introduce the personalities of the characters, the strict social rules and hierarchical differences of Colonial India (on land and sea), and the influence of the East India Company on both.
The principal characters, unlikely to have met under "normal" circumstances, find themselves connected through a ship, the Ibis and come to view themselves as "jahaj-bhais" or "ship-brothers".
