Reading this book was like eating dessert every night after work. At work I thought about coming home to read this book. It was a magnetic read, but the end left me feeling unsatisfied. Because the book was so giant there was more overall satisfaction than not. Sometimes I feel Dostoevsky has a magical power over his readers.

The prose is excellent, and the many characters, what they do and what they think, are beautifully described. However, I thought much of the characters and actions seem not relevant and I could not get what is the point of including them. This may largely be my being unfamiliar with Russian society, politics, and religion.
