George Pelecanos can certainly draw his readers in with a plausible plot and well defined characters. The plot dealt with several issues - misunderstandings between parents and children; loyalty; peer pressure; right and wrong - but as well as that it was a cracking good thriller! I found parts of it quite menacing. It's gritty and authentic I enjoyed it but some of the "slang" used in juvenile offenders unit baffled me; I frequently guessed at it's meaning. The characterisations were good but I really disliked Thomas Flynn. These points are not criticisms since everything was in context. I enjoyed the first half of this book more than the second half and felt that I had read two books vaguely joined together. BUT I definitely would read more books written by George Pelecanos
