Incredibly good. So good, I'm going to have to stop saying I don't enjoy fantasy. The storytelling, the characters, the pacing, all just very well done. The first fantasy novel, other than Harry Potter, that makes me look forward to the one that comes after.

I have been pretty jaded with fantasy books as of late (David Gemmell being the exception, but he is hardly new), but this book has again made me a believer in what has always been my favorite genre. I had honestly thought I already read everything worth reading in the genre (and a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't), but this new book by a brand new author has fortunately proved me wrong.

This book came highly praised, especially by several people I know. When I started I was expecting a lot, and I admit at the very beginning it was solid, but not quite living up the superlative reviews.
But as soon as Kvothe started telling his tale -- irresistibly well-done. Gripping, intelligent, funny, moving -- stocked with memorable characters and laced with clever (but not too precious) commentary on storytelling itself.

I first heard about this writer because of the controversy, so to speak, involving George R.R. Martin and his writing of A Dance with Dragons. I saw a cartoon in which he himself struggled with the writing of his second volume and, me being curious, I decided to research a little. The positive reviews sharpened my curiosity that became even greater with its publication in Portuguese. However, I was always somewhat reluctant to buy a book of such considerable size, so I decided to go to the libra

There's a wonderful feeling that comes with starting a book this good and this fat. It's akin to the feeling you get putting away all the good groceries. I'd imagine it's the same way a squirrel feels curled up in her nest, knowing that she has a field full of nuts and she knows where each one is. It's a comforting, secure, exhilarating feeling.

This has to be one of my favorite books ever. Although I already owned a paperback copy, it was my first e-book purchase when I got my Kindle.
Patrick Rothfuss' writing is like nothing else I've ever read. Each sentence feels so carefully and lovingly crafted, it makes me despair of ever writing anything as poetic and wonderful. I've probably read it four or five times, and I never get tired of it. I still tear up in the same places, even though I know what's going to happen. I also love the way ...more

I've read quite a few fantasy books in my lifetime, and I kept hearing about how amazing this book is, and after hearing that Patrick Rothfuss was interested in helping Nathan Fillion revive Firefly I decided to finally take the plunge and check out his work.
I wouldn't compare this book to an epic fantasy journey on the level of Tolkien, but it was enjoyable and interesting. The magic system was complex enough to have some depth to it and I found Kvothe to be full of mystery and intrigue and I a ...more

I've found that in Scifi/fantasy, I tend to enjoy worlds more than characters and stories. How is the universe different from our own, what are the flavors of its laws of physics, ways its societies have advanced, etc.
I find the particular form of magic in the Kingkiller Chronicles, 'sympathy', very intriguing. It's useful without feeling like a Plot Transmogrifier if someone whips it out, and forces the characters to be creative by linking things together rather than just saying "hocus pocus".

Best of the new generation of fantasy, but it's a flashback nested in a flashback nested in maybe one more flashback. I can deal with the Mary Sue (Larry Stu) main character, because fantasy, but the story really drags with some deeply boring set pieces.
