Wow, it's pretty amazing how different the film is from this book, but both versions hold up on their own merits. The film took the skeleton of the plot and one of the book's themes and wrapped a lush future-noir cyberpunk visual style around it. The book, on the other hand, is filled with some of PKD's best social satire/commentary, which we're introduced to right away with the Mood Organ, where you dial up your desired mood for the next several hours, and owning animals as social status symbol

It has interesting themes, especially concerning empathy and what makes someone human, but the Portuguese translation lacks some of that empathy and everything seems bland and superficial. I have yet to finish the book in English, but I'm enjoying it much more in the original language.
